Outing to Grimsthorpe Castle, near Bourne, Lincolnshire - 22nd June
We arrived around 10.30 to be welcomed with coffee and biscuits then at 11.30 we had a guided tour of the Castle and learnt about how it grew from a Watch Tower to a Tudor Mansion and then had a classical facade added in 1660. It is allowed to be called a Castle because of the crenellated King John's Tower. The tour lasted a good hour and then we were served a lovely lunch. After that we got back on the coach for a guided tour of the Capability Brown styled Grimsthorpe Park.
Trent Valley Walkers on the trail of the Lincoln Knights - 7th June
As you follow the Lincoln Knights' Trail through the historic streets of Lincoln you are following the route of the 1217 Battle of Lincoln which was one of the most important battles in English history. Rebels declared Prince Louis, son of the King of France, as the rightful King of England just before the death of King John. The Rebels held the city but could not capture the Castle, and following their defeat King John's young son, Henry III, followed him to our throne.
Annual Meeting - 11th May
Recovering from her hip operation, Gillian decided to stand down as President this year, Linda was duly elected as our new President. We had a lovely supper of cheeses, pate, cherry tomatoes, grapes, bread and crackers washed down with a glass of wine, all provided by our new Catering Committee. We also borrowed the banner for the Trent Valley Group from County House for the evening. Some of our members contributed to the making of this banner.
